Community

At Waukegan Tire, giving back is fundamental to who we are as individuals and as a company. Our family-owned and operated business has a long history of being actively involved and invested in the communities we serve. Throughout the year, Waukegan Tire participates in local community events and is a proud supporter of many local nonprofit organizations that help make our communities stronger.

Waukegan Tire has developed many unique and innovative partnerships, including with Uniroyal to distribute over 30,000 soccer balls to area youth, as well as with local artists to showcase automotive-inspired creations using recycled and reclaimed materials that we provided. We also continue to look for opportunities to educate drivers about safety, including hosting car care clinics to empower female customers and the next generation of drivers.

Waukegan Tire cares deeply about working together to strengthen the communities in which we live, work, and do business.

WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS -- The Illinois State Crime Commission honored Waukegan Tire CEO Gerald (Jerry) Nerheim with the 2015 Businessman of the Year Award. Nerheim was recognized on June 17, 2015, at the 19th annual “A Salute to Those Who Make a Difference” Awards Dinner held at the Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace.

The Illinois State Crime Commission/Police Athletic League of Illinois is a non-profit guided youth organization, with a mission to reduce juvenile delinquency and promote positive interaction between law enforcement and communities, relying heavily on athletics and recreational activities to tighten this bond.

Jerry Nerheim volunteers and participates in community events, actively supports law enforcement, and is a long-time supporter of area youth soccer leagues and organizations that help children and youth succeed. He donates to the Shop With a Cop Program and other Fraternal Order of Police programs.

In 1968, he started his own business--Waukegan Tire. He now operates four retail locations serving northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin selling major tire brands, custom wheels and automotive services. His family operated business focuses on the customer and delivering an exceptional customer experience. He is well known as an industry leader, embracing new trends in the automotive and retail markets, and continues to work along side his daughter and son in the business.

“Mr. Nerheim’s dedication, not only to his successful business but also to his community and law enforcement, creates vital partnerships that build trust within the community,“ said Illinois State Police Director, Leo Schmitz. “Honoring Jerry with this prestigious award represents his tireless commitment over four decades.”

“I am humbled to be recognized by such a well respected organization as the Illinois State Crime Commission,” said Nerheim upon receiving the award. “I am proud to be recognized by law enforcement and to be able to give back to my community.”
